The examples below demonstrate how the directors of HAHPI have performed the following activities in NSW hospitals and with health organisations
- Worked with ED Data Managers to perform detailed data analyses to identify opportunities for ED NEAT improvement: Length of Stay (LoS) in ED by patient characteristics, patients presenting at time of day, LoS in waiting room, demographic analysis of patients spending more than 24 hours in ED, supported by tests of statistical significance using FirstNet data
- Collected and analysed critical data about processes, presentations and staff: using Voice of Customer, shadowing, semi-structured interviews coupled with thematic analysis to produce graphic displays/visual management including A3 reports and swimlane diagrams showing processes crossing departmental boundaries
- Identified issues and opportunities for improvement during rapid improvement events held on-site and over four half-days to minimize interruption to patient care
- Designed and prioritised solutions and built stakeholder support and implementation momentum by starting with projects stakeholders have assessed as easy to implement and with high potential to reduce wastes
- Monitored solutions implementation and benefits including short term (30, 60 and 90 day reviews) and long-term tracking (e.g. twenty-eight months of sustained pathology-ED turn-around-times)
- Project management and governance, including regular activity and project status reporting to a range of audiences including general managers and LHD personnel.
- Built local capacity through knowledge transfer and action learning for sustained service improvement. HAHPI favours experiential training for adults and the educational approach taken is one of learning by doing wherever possible.
- Designed and delivered bespoke training to maximise the benefits of standard CI methodologies in a health care setting.
- Designed and delivered course for Lean Six Sigma Green Belt in Health, PDSA, Seven Tools of QC, Problem solving and Excel analysis.
- Design and prepare coursework for Masters of Quality for a tertiary institution.
